The RKC Spring Championships will take place on Saturday, 16 October 2021!
Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta variant, the RKC Winter Championships that was planned for June was re-scheduled to the 25 September 2021. However, due to some other factors, that had to be rescheduled again for the 3rd (and hopefully) final date of Saturday, 16 October 2021!
A major change to the event will be that all proceeds collected will go towards the "DOMO INITIATIVE". The "Domo Initiative” is aimed to help the RKC Kendo Kids obtain the equipment they need to proceed on their Kendo journey. The initiative will seek out and acquire the necessary equipment through donations, purchases, etc. This stock is then rented out to the members for a small fee. These fees are in turn put into a kitty to purchase additional club-stock. The stock is then refurbished and rotated to the next Kendo Kids who needs the equipment. The 3 Team events of the RKC Spring Championships are:
Non-Bogu Team Competition
In-Bogu Up to 1st Dan Team Shiai
n-Bogu Up 2nd Dan and Up Team Shiai
1. Non-Bogu Team Competition
Age 11 and up; Has not been in bogu; or has only been in bogu for less than 3 months
Team of 3 members. Teams will be “randomised” prior to the event and could comprise of a mixture of members from each dojo.
The event will consist of a selection of tasks that must be undertaken by the team - 1 member per task!
These tasks could be: 1) Haya Suburi; 2) Kirikaeshi; 3) Uchikomi-Keiko 4) Renzuku Wazza 5) Suburi.
Tasks will be randomly selected before each match, thereafter, teams will select which team member will perform which task.
Motodachi’s in full bogu will be required. Will request that all members of 3rd, 4th, 5th Dan to please make themselves available as motodachi.
2 teams will compete at the same time. For the purpose of time-saving, there can be 2 shiai-jo’s operating at the same time for the pool rounds. (i.e. 4 teams competing at the same time).
Shimpan will be from the pool of 1-3 Dan participants.

3x Shimpan per shiai-jo (6x Shimpan if 2x Shiai-Jo)
1x Scorekeeper per shiai-jo (2x Scorekeeper if 2x Shiai-Jo)

2x Floor-managers to co-ordinate the fight schedule and necessary competitors around.
4x Mochidachi
2. In-Bogu Up to 1st Dan Team Shiai
For all competitors who are in bogu and are 1st dan and below.
Team of 3 members. Teams will be “randomised” prior to the event and could comprise of a mixture of members from each dojo.
Only 1x 1st dan/1st Kyu per team. The rest of the team will be randomly selected.
The matches will be done in accordance with the FIK Shiai rules, AS WELL AS the temporary FIK rules that are in place due to the pandemic.
ALL fights will be max. 3-mins long.
Encho will be an additional 3 mins, per fight from the KO Rounds onwards.
Shimpan will be from the pool of 2-5 Dan participants.
Additional Staff Requirements:
2x Scorekeeper
1x Time Keeper
1x Announcer
2x Floor-managers to co-ordinate the fight schedule and necessary competitors around.
3. In-Bogu 2nd Dan & Up Team Shiai
For all competitors who are in bogu and are 2nd dan and above.
Team of 3 members. Teams will be “randomised” prior to the event and could comprise of a mixture of members from each dojo.
Each team will consist only of 1x 4th or 5th dan member. The rest of the team will be randomly selected.
The matches will be done in accordance with the FIK Shiai rules, AS WELL AS the temporary FIK rules that are in place due to the pandemic.
ALL fights will be max. 3-mins long.
Encho will be an additional 3 mins, per fight from the KO Rounds onwards.
Shimpans will be from the pool of 2-5 Dan participants who are NOT COMPETING IN THAT POOL and will be adjusted as the competition progresses.
Additional Staff Requirements:
2x Scorekeeper
1x Time Keeper
1x Announcer
2x Floor-managers to co-ordinate the fight schedule and necessary competitors around.
Other Considerations:
Entry fee of R100 per event per eligible competitor.
All proceeds will go towards the DOMO Initiative.

COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS
The current wave of the pandemic appears to be under control, however, the following safety protocols must still be observed:
Pre-screening and registration to take place before entering the dojo (the hall of the Rivonia Sports Club);
Sanitize regularly using your own sanitizers or the sanitizers provided by the sports club and/or the dojo;
Wear proper masks at all times both while waiting to compete, as well as when it is your time to compete. Please be sure to wear an APPROPRIATE mask or tengui under your MEN if you are required to be in full bogu (armour);
As an added precaution, kindly insert a plastic mouth shield into your MEN if you are taking part in bogu. Please note that this is OPTIONAL, but is highly recommended. These will be on sale on the day if required;
Adequate social distancing MAY not be an option as the hall night be rather crowded on the day. However, all doors, windows and fans will be opened to ensure maximum ventilation. It will be COLD, therefore, please bring appropriate warm clothing and socks to stay warm on the day;

ADDITIONAL UPDATES
A. Uchikomi-geiko sequences for NON-BOGU Competitors:
Seq. B: Men, Kote-Men, Kote-Dou, Harai-Men, Men
(This sequence only as it is the safest for non-bogu members. Motodachi MUST be able to do this properly and safely for the kikarete).
B. Renzuku-Wazza for NON-BOGU Competitors:
• Men (done on motodachi for x number of times)
• kote, men (done on motodachi for x number of times)
• kote, men, do (done on motodachi for x number of times)
C. Motodachi for non-bogu competitors will be assigned once all the registrations are in.
D. For the bogu competition, please refer the video released by the All Japan Kendo Federation (AKJF) entitled, "Provisional Match and Referee Rules in place until the COVID-19 pandemic is brought under control". A transcript of this video will also be made available soon:
It is important that the shimpan-in and shiai-sha understand the “provisional Shiai and Shimpan rules. Lack of understanding on the part of the shiai-sha will increase the hansoku and wakare. Please allocate around 15 mins at tournaments to fully explain the content of this video to the shiai-sha before matches commence.

E. Team Draws as at 8 OCT 2021:
The results of the draws for each division is:
* Due to the number of participants per division, one team per division will have only 2 members. These teams were randomly selected, and team members were randomly allocated. 2-member teams will be able to nominate which team member will compete twice during a fight. Fight orders must be handed into the scoring table BEFORE the fight begins. Lastly, the only rule is that each team member must fight at least once (i.e. one team member can't fight all 3 fights). This will apply to all 3 divisions.

F. Non-Bogu Team Competition (Further Breakdown)
Division A (Non-Bogu) competition will consist of the following 6 tasks, which must be distributed evenly amongst each team member (i.e. 3-member team will do 2 tasks each; 2-member team will do 3 tasks each):
Task 1: 10x Men Suburi; 10x kote Suburi; 10x Do Suburi (no motodachi required).
Task 2: 10x Kote-Men Renzuko Wazza; 4x kote-men-do Renzuko Wazza (no motodachi required).
Task 3: 50x Haiya Suburi (no motodachi required).
Task 4: 2x full Kirikaeshi on motodachi.
Task 5: 10x Kote-Men Renzuko Wazza; 4x kote-men-do Renzuko Wazza with motodachi.
Task 6: 6x Uchikomi-Keiko Sequence B on motodachi.
NB: Motodachi must be able to do their role correctly and ensure the safely of the competitors. Motodchi's will be selected from the competitors of Division C.
